Psychology is a very important part of any weight loss attempt. It doesn't matter how good your exercise or diet plan is if you don't follow it.
Motivation
Why do you want to lose weight? Come up with a list of compelling
reasons. Looking better, higher self confidence, being able to play
sports, more energy, reduced risk of life threatening illnesses,
setting a good example for your children ... the list goes on. Choose
three reasons that are important to you and write them down, keep them somewhere that you will see them regularly. On your wall is good or perhaps the inside of a cupboard door if you would like to be more discreet about it.
Discipline
Willpower and discipline are often thought of as the best ways to stick to a weight loss program. Indeed a certain amount of will power is required, but it won't work all the time. Will power will get you started but very few people can stick with something through discipline alone. So what can you do?
Enjoy It
You need to learn to enjoy your new way of life. Take notice of how good excercise and healthy eating can make you feel. Enjoy the feeling of satisfaction that comes from doing something that is good for you.
Momentum
You need to be aware of the power of momentum. If you are sitting on the couch it's easy to continue doing so, but realise that as soon as you get up off the couch and walk out the door to go and exercise it will be easy to continue doing that. Just because it seems hard when you're starting out doesn't mean it will always be like this so don't let that put you off.
