Lose Ten Pounds

Even if you're a long way from your "ideal weight" it can be helpful to set a smaller goal like losing ten pounds.  What does it take to lose that amount of weight?

How much Exercise 

So if you want to lose 10 pounds worth of fat, how much exercise would you need to do?   You would need to burn approximately 34,731 calories.  That sounds like a lot and it is, that's why patience is required.  It would take about 100 hours of brisk walking to burn that many calories.  So if you walk an hour every day it would take roughly 14 weeks or just over three months to burn that much fat.  It will vary quite a bit depending on your metabolism and various other factors but that should give you a general idea of how much exercise is required to lose weight.

How much Less Food

What if you try to lose the weight by eating less food?  You need to consume 34,741 calories less.  A regular small chocolate bar contains about 255 calories, so you would need to take 136 chocolate bars out of your diet.  Let's just saying you're currently eating 1 chocolate bar per day, it would take 19 weeks or a bit over four months to lose the weight.

If you regularly consume "junk food" start by cutting that out.

One gram of fat contains 9 calories.

15% of the fat deposits in the body are actually water and supporting structures.  So that makes the task of losing weight 15% easier.
