A Life Changing Event

We have all heard how exercise is good for your health and can help you to loss weight, but most people have a lot of trouble exercising with the sole purpose of losing weight.  One of the best ways to motivate yourself to exercise is to choose an event to work towards. A run, cycling event, hiking, swim or triathlon are just a few of the possibilities.  This way you can focus on getting fit so you don't fall over in a heap on event day, that is much more likely to motivate you. 

Choosing an Event

When choosing an event you want something that is achievable but challenges you to increase your fitness.  Attempting to go from sitting on the couch non-stop to running a marathon in two weeks is likely to cause problems (to say the least).  There's nothing wrong with a lofty exciting goal like a marathon but you'll want to set some smaller goals to help you get there.

The main thing is to find something which really captures your imagination.  If you've always thought "wouldn't it be cool to do a ..." then that's the sort of event that going to get you excited.

It might be helpful to choose an event that you actually have to sign up and pay a bit of money for, that way you're less likely to back out of it.  Get other people involved you can discuss how your training is going. 

Signing up to play a sport you enjoy is also a great way to motivate yourself.  It's all the better if it's a team sport so you'll have a responsibility to the other members of team.

Become an Addict 

The great thing about exercising is that it's addictive - once you've been doing it for a few weeks.  Your body and brain like exercise it's just not always easy to see that when you're watching TV or sitting in front of the computer (like I am know).  There will always be things that pull you away from it like getting sick or injured but once you're better it will only take a little bit of self discipline to get started again.

Hopefully this will help you become a exercise junky instead of a junk food addict.  You'll start to think in a different way.  Instead of craving unhealthy food you will not even find those foods appealling anymore.  If you haven't exercised for a couple of days you'll begin to crave exercise.
